LFI, from AUS, has a DNA-Match with me on
- myheritage: 32,1 cM (longest one 23,9 cM) across 2 segments, possible 5th to 9th cousin.
Her daughter JVH and her mother RCA have also a DNA-Match with me on
- JVH: myheritage: 30,8 cM (longest one 20,5 cM) across 2 segments, possible 3rd to distant cousin.
- RCA: myheritage: 29,5 cM (longest one 29,5 cM) across 1 segments, possible 5th to 9th cousin.
All three have a match with my father and my two daughters (see below), but not with my brother.
On the other side, my brother has a DNA with ROF on
- myheritage: 90,8 cM (longest one 63,0 cM) across 4 segments, possible 3rd to 7th cousin.
He is also the only one, together with my father, who has a match with her. Neither I nor my daughters have a match with ROF. Only common matches between my brother and ROF are:

PVH is the husband of LFI and manages her tree, that’s why I’m in contact with him. I do not match with him, neither do the other components of my family.

Please note: as the DNA is not passed exactly 50% from the parents to the children, I multiplicated the percentage of DNA times 1,9 (1,7, 1,6, 1,5) instead of times 2 going back from the last known, i.e. the one of my father and LFI’s mother. How imprecise is the percentage of shared DNA passed through generation can be seen comparing my father and LFI’s mother, me and LFI, and my daughters and LFI’s daughter. Because of this, there could be one to three more steps back, i.e. generation, to be considered.
Considering the surnames in LFI’s tree compared with the ones in mine, following considerations should be made about the names, looking for our MRCA:
- Greco: the name Sebastiano appeares in my tree often (e.g. 2nd name of my uncle and the brother of my grandfather). Alfio doesn’t recurre in my tree but for collateral branches. The name Grazia appears in my tree as second name of Maria Grazia Greco, daughter of Salvatore Greco, my great-grandfather. Being Grazia as second name, it might be that Grazia Greco was her aunt or great-aunt.
- Tomarchio: Rosario, Orazia, and Serafina do not appeare in my tree, not even in collateral branches.
- Russo: Rosario and Lucia do not appear in my three, not even in collateral branches. Gaetano does appear in my tree, but on my grandmother side rather than on my grandfather side.
Thus, according to the table above, LFI and I should be
- 5th cousin, if my Salvatore Greco is related to LFI’s Alfio or Grazia Greco.
- 6th cousin, if my Angela Tomarchio is related to LFI’s Rosario or Orazia Tomarchio.
- 7th cousin, if my Giambattista Greco (or one of his descendants) is related to LFI’s Alfio or Grazia Greco. Or if my Giuseppe or Angela Tomarchio (or one of his/her descendants) are related to LFI’s Serafina or Rosario or Orazia Tomarchio. Or if my Carmela Russo (or one of her descendants) is related to LFI’s Rosario or Gaetano Russo.
- 8th or 9th cousin, if the MRCA is further back in time.
Location
Possible location of the MRCA between LFI and me should be found in Sicily, in the province of Catania.
It seems that my ancestors from that region were moving around a lot, so it could be possible that someone of them met some of LFI’s ancestors. Following table shows the distance in kilometers between the known birth places of mine and LFI’s ancestors.
The distance is as of today (Google Maps, routes by feet), but at those times could have been just some kilometers more. Anyway a distance that could have been done by feet in one day.

The difficulties in searching the documents is given also by the changes in jurisdiction of Zafferana Etnea and the towns nearby during the times when our ancestors lived.
Other possible Locations
Fichera is also a surname I saw in the books of St. Catherine Cathedral in Alexandria (Egypt). Could the MRCA has lived or even born there?
An Alfio Greco, not related to me as per current status of the research, is also present in the books of St. Catherine Cathedral. Whether is the same that appear in LFI’s tree must be still checked.
Considering the location (Milo, just 4,7 Km from Bongiardo) and the names (e.g. Sebastiana and Grazia Greco in LFI’s tree), my best guess at the moment would be that the MRCA should be found in the Greco family. Thus more research on the descendants and the collateral branches of Giambattista Greco and Maria Di Bella as well as of Sebastiana, Alfio and Grazia Greco is required.
