I have many DNA-Matches on different sites with individuals of the Grasso families (plural because at the moment I don’t know if they all belong to the same family or branch).

  • PGR on familytreedna: 40,0 cM, longest 13 cM, Y-DNA Haplogroup: J-M172, possible 3rd to 5th cousin.
  • AGR on familytreedna: 24,0 cM, longest 10 cM, Y-DNA Haplogroup: J-M172, possible 5th to distant cousin.
  • IGR on 23andme: 20,0 cM across 2 segments, 0,27%, possible 3rd to 6th cousin. She doesn’t have a tree on 23andme or it is not visible and she doesn’t list any site where her tree is. Moreover, she doesn’t list any surnames or locations she is looking for. Thus a comparison with her surnames is not possible. Her mitocondrial Haplogroup is N1b1b (mine being H), but as it is heritage on the maternal lineage, it is nor relevanto for my researches about this surname. I should contact her for more information and possible relationship.
  • RGR on ancestry: 13,0 cM across 2 segments, possible 5th to 8th  cousin.
  • MKG
    • on 23andme: 14,0 cM across 1 segment, 0,18%, possible 3rd to distant cousin. On this site she doesn’t have a tree or it is not visible. She is looking for Maria Cavallaro and location Italy, not so much for starting a research. Her mitocondrial Haplogroup is H, like mine, but as it is heritage on the maternal lineage, it is nor relevanto for my researches about this surname. A comparison of the common matches might give the direction.
    • on ancestry: 9,0 cM across 1 segment, possible 5th to 8th  cousin
  • FGR on 23andme: 12,0 cM across 1 segment, 0,16 %, possible 3rd to distant cousin. He doesn’t have a tree on 23andme or it is not visible. However he lists Grasso and Isaia as surnames, and Catania as locations he is looking for. He doesn’t list any site where his tree is. Hir Y-DNA Haplogroup is H, like mine. His mitocondrial Haplogroup is J-M241 (mine being R-P311), but as it is heritage on the maternal lineage, this haplogroup is not relevant for my researches about this surname. A comparison of the common matches might give the direction.

On myheritage I do not have any DNA-match with this surname, but matches, who have this surnames in their trees (see below).

As of now, I don’t know the relationships between the above mentioned individuals and if they belong all to one and the same family or branch.

However, looking at this list, I will consider PGR to be the most suitable candidate for further researches, as he share the most cM with me.

Notes about the % of DNA

Because FamilyTreeDNA gives only the cM and not the percentage of DNA shared, I converted this into a percentage of DNA dividing it per 74.

Moreover, as the DNA is not passed exactly 50% from the parents to the children, I multiplicated the percentage of DNA times 1,7 instead of times 2 going back from one generation to the other.

Thus, the % of DNA in the following tables is a rough guess and should not be taken as exact.

None of the surnames of PGR’s ancestors is present in my main tree, although some of them does appear in my tree, e.g. Finocchiaro. Gentile too appears in my tree, but in the branch of my paternal grandmother, whose ancestors come from Messina rather than from Catania province.

In PGR’s tree appears also Giuseppa Di Bella (surname also in my tree), b. unknown, d. 13-Sep-1988. But she is in a collateral branch of him, so she should not have contributed to our common DNA pool.

Considering the names in PGR’s tree compared with the ones in mine, following considerations should, looking for our MRCA:

  • Leopoldo, Leonardo, Mariano, Pietro, Veneranda, Michele, Agostino, Raffaele, Venera, Rosaria, Vincenzo, Caterina, and Pasquale do not appear in my tree, at least at the current status of the research and in the relevant branch;
  • Alfia appears in collateral branches;
  • Agata, Salvatore, Giuseppa, Sebastiana, and Maria do appear in my tree on the paternal branch.

Thus, according to the table above, PGR and I should be

  • 3rdcousin, if ….
  • 4th cousin, if ….
  • 5th cousin, if ….
  • 6th or 8th cousin, if the MRCA is further back in time.

The only surname present in both trees on the DNA line, is Russo. Thus, my best guess at the current stage of my research is that the MRCA between AGR and me should be found in that family.

However, one of the common matches between AGR and me, is O. Ross, who matches with me and has a common match with me LFI, so another possible surname for the MRCA could be Fichera or other surnames appearing in LFI’s tree (see The Fichera Families for more details).

Of the other surnames none is present in my main tree, although some of them does appear in my tree, e.g. Finocchiaro and Quattrochi. Leotta too appears, in the variant Aliotta, in my tree, but in the branch of my paternal grandmother, whose ancestors come from Messina rather than from Catania province.

Considering the names in AGR’s tree compared with the ones in mine, following considerations should be done, looking for our MRCA:

  • Aurelio,  Serena, Margherita, Mario,  Venerando, Rosario, Venera, Michele, Nicolò, Serafina, Caterina, and Alessandro do not appear in my tree, at least at the current status of the research and in the relevant branch;
  • Gaetano, Alfio, Pasqualina,  and Flavia appear in collateral branches;
  • Francesca, Maria, Carmela, Vincenza, Grazia, Salvatore, Giuseppe, Anna, Giovanni, and Agata do appear in my tree on the paternal branch.

Thus, according to the table above, AGR and I should be

  • 5th cousin, if Maria Russo (in AGR’s tree) was the aunt of Carmela Russo (in my tree);
  • 6th cousin, if …
  • 7th cousin, if …
  • 8th cousin, if …
  • 9th or more distant, if the MRCA is further back in time.

Location

Possible location of the MRCA between PGR and AGR on one side and me on the other side should be found in Sicily, in the province of Catania.

It seems that my ancestors from that region were moving around a lot, so it could be possible that someone of them met some of PGR’s ancestors. Following table shows the distance in kilometers between the known birth places of mine and PGR’s ancestors.

Two main town appear in PGR’s tree: Giarre and Mascali. These two towns are also in my tree, so that the MRCA should be most probably looked for there.

The distance is as of today (Google Maps, routes by feet), but at those times could have been just some kilometers more. Anyway a distance that could have been done by feet in one or two days.

The difficulties in searching the documents is given also by the changes in jurisdiction of Zafferana Etnea and the towns nearby during the times when our ancestors lived.
