The Mercieca Family

The possible connection to the Mercieca family is assumed based to a DNA match with a member of the Pisani family.

When I first looked at the DNA matches between my father and CME I was surprised to see that he was looking among others for the surnames Bonnici and Galea. These surnames are indeed in my family tree, through Laura, my 4th cousin from the Andò-Ferrante branch. Therefore I looked whether CME had a match with me too. Indeed!

Other surnames CME is looking for are Attard, Spiteri, and Mercieca. The first two are very common in Alexandria (Egypt) and are said to come from Malta. For the third one I can’t do any statement as it is the first time I encoutered it.

CME and I share following DNA matches (only the first 10 are listed):

Three surnames were masked.

The Mercieca Branch

Now let’s have a look at CME’s branch:

CME partial family tree.

Two surnames in this branch are present in my family tree: Bonnici and Galea.

Moreover, the other two surnames Attard and Spiteri are very common in Alexandria (Egypt): I saw a lot of them at St. Catherine books and at the Latin Cemetery of Holy Land.

Because of my (so far indirect) relatedness with the Bonnici and Galea family, there is a dedicated page for those families.

The Tanti Family (through the Mercieca and Peri Families)

A special attention is dedicated to the Tanti family because this match (PTA) is shown also with a member of the Martello Family, who is a common match between me and AJP, see the corresponding section in The Possible Connection to the Peri Family.

PTA and I share following DNA matches (only the first 10 are listed):

Following surnames are included in the first 10 DNA matches shared with PTA (in bold the surnames already in my family tree). Listed, in parenthesis, are also those surnames matching again with me):

Other surnames included in the DNA matches with PTA are:

  • Arena (also matching with my daughter, Basinger, Beals, Camilleri, Caruana, Giampietro, and Micallef and looking for the surnames Accardi and Cristallo)
  • Basinger, Beals,
  • Ferando
  • Martello (see also The Possible Connection with the Peri Family), Mercieca (see above), Muscat,
  • Pirillo (also matching with Di Diego, Holford, Micallef, Sones, and Zahra and looking for the surnames Accardi, Bordonaro, and Laiacona)
  • Schrouder.

As one can see, between me and PTA are quite all the same surnames as between me and CME. This strengthen the hypothesis that this is a real match. And all the rest too, indeed.

Conclusion

As of now there are no other evindences supporting this hypothesis, although strong. More research has to be done concerning the Pisani family.
